DETROIT – Earlier today, US Attorney General Eric Holder released a statement in which he confirmed that the federal government would recognize the over 300 marriages performed in Michigan on Saturday. The marriages were performed following Judge Friedman’s ruling that Michigan’s ban on marriage equality was unconstitutional, and before an appeals court issued a stay on same-sex marriage licenses in Michigan pending completion of the Michigan government’s appeal. The appellate court is scheduled to issue a ruling on the appeal this summer.
Equality Michigan, the statewide anti-violence and advocacy organization serving Michigan’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and HIV communities, has launched a petition asking Michigan’s Governor and Attorney General to drop their appeal in court against marriage equality in Michigan. The organization delivered over 14,000 signatures to the offices of Governor Snyder and Attorney General Schuette earlier this week. The petition now has over 19,000 signatures.
