In a 5 -4 decision today, the Supreme Court of The United States ruled in favor of same-sex marriage. The culmination of decades of legal battles and political activism has resulted in the decision that same-sex marriage is a right guaranteed by the constitution. Justice Anthony M. Kennedy wrote in the opinion of the court that “No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family… In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were.”
Of those dissenting, Justice John G. Roberts said “If you are among the many Americans — of whatever sexual orientation — who favor expanding same-sex marriage, by all means celebrate today’s decision. Celebrate the achievement of a desired goal. Celebrate the opportunity for a new expression of commitment to a partner. Celebrate the availability of new benefits. But do not celebrate the Constitution. It had nothing to do with it.”
Before this decision 36 states had legalized same-sex marriage, Michigan of course not being one of them. It is with great pride that we move forward, extending the right and benefits of marriage to all, and preserving the institution of marriage for the next generation.
